Technical note

Before you convert 3DS to STEP

3DS stores a surface made of triangles, while STEP is built for exact solid geometry. The conversion has to derive surfaces from that triangle mesh, so the result is faithful to the shape but is not the same thing as a parametric model with clean features and editable dimensions. 3DS can hold motion as well as shape: a skeleton, keyframes or morph targets that move the model over time. STEP stores one static shape, so the result is a single pose and the animation itself does not carry over.
