How PSD and AVIF differ in practice
PSD carries 16 bits per channel and AVIF carries 12, so tonal steps get coarser during conversion. It shows up first in smooth gradients such as skies. If the result will be edited further, move to a 12-bit format only at the very end. PSD files are often prepared in CMYK for print, and AVIF is an RGB format. Colours are converted between the two spaces during the run, and saturated print colours can shift visibly. If the output is heading back to print, keep an untouched copy of the original.
