STEP to STL: what carries over and what does not

STEP holds exact mathematical surfaces and STL approximates them with triangles. Curves become faceted, and how visible that is depends on the level of detail, a value from 1 to 7 in the 3D formats loading settings. A middle value suits most printing; for a close-up render of a shiny curved part, raise it and expect a larger file. Without further settings, a STEP assembly converts to a single STL. With Load STEP as separated shapes switched on, each part becomes its own file instead, so one assembly fills a folder with one STL per part.
