FIT to DDS: what carries over and what does not

A scientific camera records 32 bits per pixel, and the signal of interest often occupies a narrow slice of that range, while DDS shows 8. Conversion applies a display mapping, so two acquisitions that look identical afterwards can hold very different underlying intensities. Treat the DDS output as something to look at and publish rather than something to measure. FIT stores pixels without compression loss and DDS does not, so this is a one-way step. Choose a high quality setting, and avoid converting the same file back and forth, because each pass compounds the artefacts.
