What are GRB files?
GRB (GRIdded Binary) is a binary container for gridded meteorological data, defined by the WMO as code form FM 92 GRIB. A file may contain any number of independent messages, each starting with the letters GRIB and ending with 7777. Inside a message, the data are divided into sections, each with its own length: an indicator, product and identification information, a grid description, an optional bitmap that marks missing points, and the packed values. GRIB1 uses six sections, while GRIB2 uses up to nine and describes the grid, product, and packing with templates, which makes it more flexible. The values are packed into a small number of bits using a reference value and scale factors, so they must be unpacked before use. To convert a GRB file to graphics, a program picks one message, which is one two-dimensional field, such as air temperature at a given level and time, unpacks the values, marks the missing points, and arranges the grid according to its type (for example, regular latitude and longitude or a projected grid) and the direction in which it was scanned. The field is then drawn as a color-mapped image and saved as PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, or as GeoTIFF with coordinates. Files with many messages produce many images or bands.
