What are GTX files?
GTX (NOAA Vertical Datum Grid Shift) is a grid format for height corrections between vertical datums, introduced for the NOAA VDatum tool. A file begins with a short header of six values that places the grid on the map and gives its spacing and its number of rows and columns. After the header come the correction values, one for each point of the net, written as decimal numbers. Early files stored them as text, which limited the size of a grid by the memory of the computer, and the newer binary files keep the same layout but are much more compact. Points without a defined correction, such as inland areas in a tidal grid, are marked with the value -88.8888. Such a file does not contain a picture, but its values can be shown as one: a program reads the header, loads the values, makes the empty points transparent, and paints the rest with a color scale, so that the pattern of the height difference becomes visible. The picture can be saved as PNG, JPEG, or TIFF, and a GeoTIFF keeps the coordinates and the exact numbers for further use. Supported by NOAA VDatum.
