JIF to ICO: what carries over and what does not
ICO stores a limited palette rather than full colour, so the conversion has to reduce the number of distinct colours. Photographic content shows this as banding, while flat graphics and icons usually survive it untouched. ICO is lossless, so nothing further is discarded during conversion. What it cannot do is restore detail that JIF compression already removed, and the output file will usually be considerably larger.
