What are MID files?
MID is a plain-text table in which every line holds the attributes of one map object, and its partner .mif file holds the shapes. The two files are tied together by order: the first line of the .mid file belongs to the first object of the .mif file, the second line to the second object, and so on. The values on a line are separated by a delimiter, which is a tab unless the .mif header names another character, such as a comma or a semicolon, and text values are placed in quotation marks. The names and types of the columns are not written in the .mid file but in the header of the .mif file, which has a Columns line followed by a name and a type for each column, for example character with a given length, integer, decimal, or date. The .mif header also gives the version of the format, the character set, and the coordinate system. An object may have no geometry at all, and such a pair then serves as an ordinary table. If the number of lines does not match the number of objects, the files are inconsistent. The native binary form of MapInfo is the TAB format, and the MID and MIF pair is its interchange form.
