The first is the National Imagery Transmission Format, a US and NATO standard for satellite and aerial images, in which a file can carry one or several pictures together with graphics, text, and detailed information about the sensor, the time, and the security classification. The second is the National Transfer Format of Great Britain, a British Standard from 1988 that is the usual format for digital map data of Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency, such as contours, elevation models, road and river networks, and administrative boundaries. The two have nothing in common except the three letters, and the first bytes of the file show which one it is.
What are PSD files?
PSD is the default format for handling images using Adobe Photoshop and it represents a layered image file. PSDs allow later editing of available layers, including transparency, masks, alpha channels and texts, among others. After applying all desired editing, PSD files can be saved in Photoshop under more easily recognizable formats, such as JPEG or PNG, which are also smaller in size but flatten the image and hence do not allow later editing of layers.
