How PLY and STP differ in practice

PLY stores a surface made of triangles, while STP is built for exact solid geometry. The conversion has to derive surfaces from that triangle mesh, so the result is faithful to the shape but is not the same thing as a parametric model with clean features and editable dimensions. PLY holds bare numbers with no unit, and STP has to state one, so the conversion has to assume it. If the PLY was exported in inches or metres, the result is off by that same factor. Measure one known dimension after conversion.
