What are RMI files?
RMI is the RIFF-based MIDI file, also called RMID, which Microsoft introduced in 1991. It is a Standard MIDI File placed inside a RIFF container, the tagged chunk structure that is also used by WAV files. The main chunk has the form type RMID and contains a data chunk with the complete MIDI file, from its MThd header to its last track. An optional INFO list can follow, which holds descriptive text such as the artist, the comment, the copyright, and the creation date. In 2000, the MIDI Manufacturers Association extended the format with technical note RP-029, which allows a Downloadable Sounds bank to be bundled in the same file, and the same idea has been used to embed SoundFont banks, so that a song brings its own instruments and sounds the same everywhere. A program that does not understand the wrapper may fail to open the file, and tools exist that extract the plain MIDI data from it. The format is considered superseded by the Extensible Music Format.
