What are SXF files?
SXF is a file of map objects, each stored as a shape with attributes and a code that points into a classifier, in a layout that was designed for exchange between map systems. A binary file starts with a passport of the data, which describes the sheet of the map, its scale, the coordinate system, and the frame, followed by a descriptor of the data and then the records of the objects. Every record has a fixed header with the classification code of the object, the number of points, and flags, then the metric, which is the list of coordinates, and then the semantics, which are the attributes such as a name, a height, or a width. The metric may be stored as integers or as floating-point numbers, and in two or three dimensions, so the format can be used for maps of high accuracy. Objects are described by codes only, and the meaning of the codes, the layers, and the drawing symbols come from the classifier, a file with the .rsc extension, which normally lies in the same folder as the map. Without this classifier, the objects can be read but not named or drawn properly.
