What are ARC files?
ARC (MiraMon Vectors) is the binary file of an arc layer in MiraMon's structured vector format, which is open and has a published specification. It stores the coordinates of every arc, with or without a third coordinate for height, and the layer is one of a family of related files: the .nod file with the nodes, the A.dbf table with the attributes in dBASE format, the A.rel metadata file in the INI style, and the N.dbf and N.rel files of the nodes. The nodes carry the topology, meaning which arcs meet at each point, and a layer of polygons in the .pol format refers to the arcs by their index, so a polygon is a closed shape described by one or more arcs. A layer can hold only one kind of geometry. To convert such a layer to graphics, a program reads the arcs and their attributes and draws the lines onto a canvas in the coordinate system of the layer, with a chosen color and width, which may depend on an attribute, for example a different style for roads of different classes. The picture can be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or GeoTIFF, where the coordinates are preserved, and its resolution must be chosen, because vector lines have no pixel size of their own.
