Technical note

Before you convert ECW to JXL

ECW carries georeferencing: a coordinate reference system, and the real-world position and ground size of every pixel. JXL has nowhere to record any of that. The picture transfers intact, the location does not, so the output cannot be dropped onto a map afterwards without being placed by hand. Keep the ECW original if the data still has to go back into a GIS. ECW and JXL both compress by discarding data, so this is a re-encode rather than a copy. The output is built from already-compressed pixels, and the artefacts of the first encode are carried into the second. Use a high quality setting, and convert from the original whenever you still have it.
