FIT to BMP: what to expect from the conversion
FIT stores 32-bit greyscale covering the full dynamic range of the scan, and BMP shows 8 bits. The conversion applies a window level, so what ends up visible depends on the window you choose. Decide separately whether patient metadata should be copied to the output or stripped from it. FIT carries 32 bits per channel and BMP carries 8, so tonal steps get coarser during conversion. It shows up first in smooth gradients such as skies. If the result will be edited further, move to an 8-bit format only at the very end.
