How to Convert Multiple HPGL Files to AI?

What changes when you convert HPGL to AI
HPGL stores a technical drawing with layers and line weights, and AI stores artwork meant for display. Geometry comes across, but drawing conventions such as dimension styles and hatching are flattened into ordinary strokes and fills, which is fine for publishing and awkward if the file needs to go back into CAD.
