What are MTW files?
MTW (Raster Matrix Format, matrix flavor) is a tiled raster designed for terrain heights. The grid is cut into square tiles, 256 by 256 cells by default, which lets a program read only the part of a large relief that it needs. The file has a single channel, and a cell may be a 16-bit integer or a 32-bit or 64-bit floating-point number, so the format can store both coarse elevation models and precise measurements. Besides the heights, the file records the minimum and maximum elevation, the units in which the numbers are expressed, and a flag that tells whether they are absolute or total elevations. There is also a compression method for 32-bit integer heights, and files that would be larger than the usual limit can be written in a huge-file variant, which is supported by GIS Panorama from version 11. To convert an MTW file to graphics, a program reads the tiles, converts the heights to meters using the stored units, and builds a grayscale heightmap, a colored elevation map, or a shaded relief picture. For 8-bit output the range between the minimum and the maximum is stretched, while 16-bit TIFF and GeoTIFF keep fine height steps and coordinates.
