What are PRF files?
PRF is an image format of PHOTOMOD, a photogrammetric software system of the Russian company Racurs that is used to process aerial and satellite photographs and to produce maps and elevation models. The format is also known as MegaTIFF. It was created for very large images, which can exceed 4 GB and cannot be saved in an ordinary image file. The picture is cut into smaller parts that are stored in separate files, and a small overview picture is added so that the whole image can be shown quickly at a small scale. A short .prf file ties all of the parts together and describes the image. A related variant for elevation data uses the .x-dem extension.
What are PPM files?
PPM or Portable Pixelmap files are image files included in Netpbm, an open source graphics program. The other widely used Netpbm formats are PGM (Portable Graymap) and PBM (Portable Bitmap). All three are image formats and are sometimes called collectively PNMs (Portable Anymap format). While PGMs contains grayscale images, PPMs include color images and they represent intermediary files used in the conversion of less known formats using the Portable Bitmap Utilities. PPM files are mostly operated on UNIX and Intel-based platforms.
