RW2 to BMP: what carries over and what does not
RW2 files hold unprocessed sensor data, so white balance and exposure are still adjustable. Converting to BMP bakes those decisions into the pixels, and highlight recovery is no longer available afterwards. Set white balance and exposure before the run rather than after. RW2 carries 12 bits per channel and BMP carries 8, so tonal steps get coarser during conversion. It shows up first in smooth gradients such as skies. If the result will be edited further, move to an 8-bit format only at the very end.
