SVS to ICO: what carries over and what does not

SVS is a pyramidal whole-slide image: one file carries the same scanned slide at several magnifications, and the largest level can run past 100,000 pixels on a side. ICO holds a single flat picture at one resolution. That makes the magnification the decisive choice, because there is no sensible original size to fall back on here: the full-resolution level of a slide scan is larger than most image software will open at all. ICO stores a limited palette rather than full colour, so the conversion has to reduce the number of distinct colours. Photographic content shows this as banding, while flat graphics and icons usually survive it untouched.
